1.1 Calculate how many barcodes you need
Did you know that you can’t use the same barcode for two different items (i.e. colored shirts)? Variations from one product to another will require a separate GTIN/U.P.C. barcode. You’ll need to identify the number of barcodes you need in order to get a GS1 Company Prefix, but we can help!
If you make three t-shirts, but each shirt comes in three sizes (small, medium, large), three styles (short sleeve, long sleeve, 3⁄4 sleeve), three colors (blue, pink, purple), and three packages (single, 2-pack, 3-pack), you need to identify 81 product variations (3 sizes x 3 styles x 3 colors x 3 packages = 81).
Selecting the correct prefix capacity makes a difference to your business. Most of our member companies select prefixes that have a larger capacity than what they need at the present moment. Why? These companies are planning for their future growth. More products and variations means more GTINs/U.P.C.s.
You cannot exchange your GS1 Company Prefix for a new one or add additional capacity to the existing prefix you have. However, you can always come back to get another prefix. Keep in mind, having all of your products associated with one prefix number might be easier for your company to manage and more cost effective.
